“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”
- Edgar Degas

Dear Delegates and MUN Directors,

Throughout history, illustrations and written media have worked closely together to revolutionize communication and shape histories. From manuscripts to courtroom illustrations to political cartoons - and now to the work of the DAIMUN illustration committee - art remains invaluable to maintaining engagement and communicating ideas in ways the written word alone would find impossible.

The use of lighthearted depictions and visual communication in media illustrations has made this form of communication extremely accessible to people across the international community and from all walks of life. This ability of illustrations to appeal to everyone has historically encouraged people less involved in politics to form opinions on significant matters and has even spurred people into taking action to create change.

The key to illustrations’ importance lies in the multitudes of nuanced messages viewers can elicit from a single work. The versatility of illustrations is unparalleled among forms of informative media, making them extremely important to the formation and development of personal perspectives and education.

Artists shouldering this vital responsibility must, per the adage, tell a thousand words in every picture. Each line they put down must leave a story floating off the page and into a reader’s heart. A change of colors can result in a shift in the narrative, demonstrating the level of critical thinking and care that illustrators must use in their works. Such is the responsibility of DAIMUN’s illustration committee - that and creating illustrations at supersonic speed!

With the responsibility, however, comes valuable opportunities for growth and enjoyment. Delegates of illustration at DAIMUN 2024 can expect to feel the thrill of working in the fast-paced press room, the consistent fulfillment of working creatively, and the joy of being in a friendly, collaborative environment with like-minded peers. Truly, the illustration committee’s most distinctive feature is its warm atmosphere, with delegates giving each other constructive feedback. Delegates can regularly learn from and interact with their peers, which provides an exciting opportunity to make new connections with people who are also interested in visual arts.

By being faced with the unique challenge of designing and creating meaningful illustrations about matters of international significance, delegates will develop both their artistic and critical thinking skills. This unique opportunity encourages delegates to work outside of their comfort zones in an environment which gives them adequate support to grow as artists and international citizens, truly embodying the spirit of the conference.

Future delegates of illustration at DAIMUN 2024: ready your drawing boards, keep both your pencils and your wits sharp, and get ready to enter a world of opportunity.

Warm Regards,
Avantika Kampani
